Sometimes I awake to the sound of a magpie imitating a coffee percolator. My house is full of animals with interesting musical tastes - my cheerfully misguided bird has a great repertoire of TV jingles and catchy choruses, but has no ability whatsoever to sound like a normal feathered creature. The confusion probably stems from the fact that it has grown up next to my stereo, and has thus been exposed to a wide variety of sounds that birds were never meant to hear.
I�ve always been fascinated by the variety of people and music you come across when you turn your radio dial from one end to another. During high school I decided to find out more about these mysterious goings-on, and one day turned up at SYN FM, a Melbourne student-run station. Pretty soon I started doing graveyard shifts, and was amazed at the number of people who not only listen to their radios at 4am, but are inclined to ring up with suggestions.
Inspired by my late-night adventures, I later decided to major in Radio Production as part of a Media Studies degree at RMIT University, which I�m currently in the 3rd and final year of.
Curious as to how radio stations worked during daylight hours, I also started volunteering at a couple of community stations, including PBS FM. Most of the work I do there is in helping out with production, such as putting together gig guides, making promos and station IDs, and interviewing bands.
When I finish studying, I�d like to be involved in some kind of media-related profession, which is part of the reason I applied to be a noise / AMRAP Music Correspondent. This Initiative provides the opportunity to work on a creative project, which will help me develop my media and radio-related experiences.
