In 1978 two of my favourite records were made. Talking Heads� �More Songs About Buildings and Food� and Tom Waits� �Blue Valentine�. On the strength of these inspired musical releases, I decided the world was an alright place to pop out in to.
Twenty-five years later and I find myself happily immersed in sound. Days are variously filled with working (Talks Producer) at my favourite radio station (3RRR FM) and helping shape the content of what Melbourne listens to. With broadcasting; also at 3RRR, who have managed to invert traditional notions of Monday-itis by granting me three hours on air between 4 and 7pm every week to play whatever I please. Monday is my new favourite day of the week. With studying; finishing off the final laps of my Media Studies degree at RMIT. And with much playing; indulging in the blessing that is the Melbourne live music scene and seeing bands every week, with movies and plenty of dancing thrown in for good measure.
I hate people asking for my number one favourites, I�m suspicious of anyone who can single out any cultural product as the singularly greatest they have experienced. Just glancing through old editions of Rolling Stone and Mojo give you a clue to how fluid the �100 Greatest Albums of All Time� can be. For me, music is deeply engrained in emotional memory. The jerk in your heart you feel when Gillian Welch hits that right note and the addiction you harbour in feeling it again and again. The memory of a long night in a country shack, with Brian Eno drifting out of an old stereo. I produce and present radio in the hope that assembling mine and others words against the right sound at the right moment will also stir that inner murmur.
