biography As a young designer, Michael Hockey has set himself on a mission to push the boundaries of mens clothing in Australia.

Menswear lacks expression, self-expression, because it is seen as too flamboyant or, as many people put it, camp, he says.

Hockey, 24, was studying acting at Uni when he started making his own clothes between shows. He says his acting experience allowed him to see the theatrical side of fashion as opposed to just the generic.

Launching his street couture label Michael in May 2001, Hockey concentrated on customised T-shirts, rugby jumpers and kilts, which were picked up by leading boutiques like Orson & Blake and Capital-L in Sydney and Alice Euphemia in Melbourne. Hockey has dubbed his new summer range the Battle of the Threads, with construction, colours and shapes inspired by medieval armour and the New Romantics of the early 80s.
