REMIX THIS: BASS KLEPH vs DOWNSYDE

When it came to remixing 'El Questro' for the noise remix project, Stu Tyson, aka Bass Kleph, could see no Downsyde.

Stu Tyson (22, Frenchs Forest NSW) records and produces under the moniker Bass Kleph. Beginning his musical life as a drummer, Stu has refocused his rhythmic talents to more electronic forms of music and now Bass Kleph is an emerging talent on the Australian breaks scene. Bass Kleph tracks and remixes have been turning up on breaks compilations for a few years now, and Stu has earned praise from many established DJ and producers.

And now Downsyde has picked out Bass Klephs Shake Your What? remix as their favourite mix of their tune El Questro for round one of the noise remix project.

We asked Stu a few questions...

Tell us about your idea for the remix where did you start and what were you aiming for?

I originally did a very Neptunes influenced hip hop remix, but after much umming and arrgh-ing decided to pick the tempo up a bit. I basically started all over again. I tried to blend my breakbeat style with Downsyde's latin flavours, and a sprinkle of techno. I wanted to change up the parts a little to give the track a similar sound but different rhythms/melodies, and to have a final track that started somewhere and evolved into something slightly different.

How did you put the whole think together?

The track was put together in Pro Tools LE at my home studio. Apart from using a few analog toys (Studio Electronics SE1 and a Syndrum Quad) the whole track was done in audio. When the track got too big (more than 32 tracks) I went in to Floating Point (my record label's studios) to continue work on their Pro Tools TDM system. I'm not sure exactly how long it took, but I was working off and on for about two, maybe two and a half weeks.

What other remixing/production/DJing work do you do?

I have been writing and producing my own and other artists work on Floating Point (kick ass Sydney electronic label). I co-produced Q45's monster of a breaks tune "Shabby Chic" with my partner in crime Mako. Peret (Mako) and I have also recently finished our first tune together with a quirky dirty remix to boot. Its called "Like Abort Juan" and we've cunningly titled our production outfit "Makleph Bass Ko". On the way also is a few 12"s of my own, featuring some amazing guest players and MCs from old Sydney town.

On the DJing front, I've been lucky enough to play at some excellent clubs all around Sydney, down in Melbourne, and soon heading off to Bris Vegas as well. On a more regular basis u can often hear me DJing/singing sea shanties at my favourite "Super Club", Kerfuffle @ Aqua Lounge (Thursdays in Manly).

What do you enjoy about remixing and producing? Why do you do it?

I like experimenting with sounds and ideas in my own time. Its great being able to play/record a whole lot of music/ideas into a computer with a final vision in mind, and then chip away at it until it has become exactly the way you hear it in your head. Don't get me wrong, I love working with other people. I used to play drums in bands through out high school and still think at some point you have to have input from other people.

Why do I do it? I wake up every day and its all I think about until I can get in front of the speakers and make some noise.
