With his first remix ever, Left Jeff has impressed Daniel Johns and all in Silverchair with a reworking of their song.
Jeff Cox (18, Tecoma VIC) has been making electronic sounds in his bedroom for a few years now, but the triple j/noise remix project gave him his first chance at working on a remix. And with Jeff�s success with his reworking of �Tuna In The Brine�, there could be quite a few quality remixes to come from this talented young producer.
Silverchair listened to all the noise remixes while on the tour bus in Europe. After being really impressed with the quality of all the entries, the band picked out Left Jeff�s �Canned Tuna� remix as their favourite for their song �Tuna In The Brine�.
We put a few questions to Jeff about his remix�
Tell us about your idea for the remix � where did you start and what were you aiming for?
Originality was always an aim, as I think it should be for any dance producer if they want to be heard. I never really have a plan when I create music but I sometimes start off with a theme to get me going.
With this song as my first remix, I begun by layering certain vocal parts that sounded good together and kept in mind that I would be sampling the orchestra part for a more real sound. I doubled the tempo when I laid out the beat so I could make a drum and bass song for all you crazies.
How did you put the whole think together?
I put the remix together using software and my midi keyboard on my average CPU. It took a couple of weeks to make and perfect, but I had delays because of the constant crashing of my virus-infected CPU experienced. All in all it was a good result considering I was cramped up in the little corner of my bedroom.
The reason I picked Silverchair was because of the challenge I craved. I hadn�t heard a Silverchair dance song before, so I thought I would be able to come up with an interesting piece. My wacky style with some smooth vocals - yeeeah!
What other remixing/production/DJing work do you do?
The other production work I do is happening now and the years to come in my Audio diploma course. We work with Pro tools and Logic audio. I have taken on a short course on turntable artistry with a good DJ/audio engineer as my teacher and have been creating my own type of music on my computer for a few years now.
What do you enjoy about remixing and producing?
I have always loved being creative. If I wasn�t talking I would probably be drawing, acting or writing. Over the last few years I have turned to music to express my creativity. This could have been sparked by my dad as a trumpet musician and my mother as a singer (and because my friend introduced me to an old and simple music creation program that brought new light to budding old me).
I'm into the whole dance world, which revolves around funky beats, good samples, turntables and anything digital. I like the way audio can be manipulated and moulded to suit my style because the music I create can reflect my character - a little different - while still keeping up a nice beat. I want people to know what styles of music I have listened to and learnt to love. When making a song, I think the possibilities of originality are endless because there are so many ways of approaching it. It just depends if the artist is doing it for her/himself or pleasing a certain audience.
