BATTLE OF THE SEXES

Noise hit the streets to find clothes cooler than the catwalk, and came across Millie Fairhall at the Fortitude Valley markets in Brisbane

I used to get cut at mum for not colour coordinating my clothes properly! laughs Millie Fairhall, musing about her childhood fashion ideals. Mum made all my clothing when I was little, and Ive always liked the idea of having clothing thats individual and made from your own ideas and with your own two hands.

At just 20 years of age, Millie has been making clothes for her label EILLIM for about a year now. I was out skating one day and the shirt I was wearing was really pissing me off, she remembers. It was a tee, but it was too short and kept riding up and I spent most of the time hitching my shirt down rather then actually skating. So I made some of my own up and put my own graphics on them and the girls liked them, so I made more, but then the boys liked the designs too, so I made guys tees and its just gone from there.

Millies clothes are hand sewn, printed, bleached, deconstructed and generally trashed for fun, she says, and you can currently find them being sold at the Fortitude Valley markets in Brisbane. Its really fun to be walking down the street with my friend Larissa and well see some guy or girl wearing EILLIM clothing and well both be like, YAY! she laughs. A very unprofessional response, but it really makes me chuffed to see peoples support and the way they have adapted an EILLIM piece to their own personal style. I like that.

As for the future? Millie says she wouldnt mind being a designer, artist, surfer, skater and world adventure seeker with her own small clothing and surf/skate hardware store. I want to create something thats for guys and girls and to kind of fade that division betweenthem, she admits, making clothing for girls thats more then just a tee with a hibiscus flower on it! Guys wear thats a bit more adventurous and open-minded. Watch this space.
