A SMALL PRESS CONSPIRATOR
Noise scoured record stores, bookshops, kids� bedrooms and the web to find a collection of zines that reflect what the Aussie zine-scene has to offer.
The Small Press Conspirators, published within the noise magazine, features zines, artist profiles and guides on how to get your hands on some of the greatest independent media around.
A small press conspirator, Sydney-based marktronics can be found making wall-zines or creating issues of Long Story Short, with co-conspirator Rebec. Long Story Short is a serial zine featuring snippets of overheard conversations and musings on life while his wall-zine features over one hundred A3 stills taken from the movie Stand By Me and pasted in sequence on a wall. A once off, the wall-zine appeared one night in Fukuoaka, Japan. The Stand By Me zine also emerged as a miniature fold-out concertina zine in Australia. Both are available at www.voxpopulis.org
Marktronics started making zines �because I wanted some guys in a record store to think I was cool.� That was nearly ten years ago, and Marktronics has since created seven issues of Damn Kids, four issues of Long Story Short, two issues of Key Chain and the gorgeous Stand By Me zine which is a mighty two centimetres small and is bought in a small plastic cliplock sachet.
Clearly every day life provides inspiration for Long Story Short that captures and preserves the simplest moments in a beautiful manner. But who else influences marktronics works?
�My Dad wrote a letter to the manager of The Black Stump after we received bad service at one of their restaurants. So I guess he�s a pretty big influence,� laughs Marktronics. �Thanks for nothing, Shoppa-dockets.�
A word of warning. After browsing through mark�s zines, or any of the amazing zines The Small Press Conspirators has to offer, you will be inspired. You may even fancy yourself as aspiring to become a zine creater, in which case, marktronics has some words of wisdom to get you off the couch.
�Stop aspiring and just go and friggin' do it.�
